Benfica is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Lisbon, with an area of 7.94 km² and 36 821 inhabitants (2011). Density: 4 637.4 inhabitants/km².

It encompasses about two thirds of the great lung of the Portuguese capital, the Monsanto Forest Park.

It started out as a peasant village in the Saloia region. With them also some religious orders settled in the territory.

In the 15th century it was promoted to the seat of the court of the Lisbon Term, being granted two private judges.
It was also at this time that three important brotherhoods were established: Nossa Senhora do Amparo, Santo António and São Sebastião.

In the 18th century began to be registered a strong attraction of new wealthy classes, seduced by the landscape, who settled in farms.
In the 19th century, public transport connections appeared and the city grew exponentially.

With the extinction of the Lisbon Term in 1852, Benfica´s territory was first integrated in the new Belém municipality and later, in 1886, was divided. The part outside the new Lisbon ring road was integrated into Oeiras (and currently in Amadora) and the inner part was integrated into Lisbon, giving rise to the current parish.

The city continued to grow rapidly, which was reflected in the growing urbanisation of the parish. From the 1950s to the 1990s, the population tripled from 17 843 inhabitants to around 50 000 inhabitants.
In 1959 the territory was again divided and gave rise to the parish of São Domingos de Benfica.

More recently, along with the growing construction, the resident population has decreased, not only due to ageing, but also due to the migration of the younger inhabitants to the periphery.
