São Domingos de Benfica:
Where does it get such a name from and since when has it existed? No one is sure of its origin and several stories can be attributed to it.
Memories say that it could have already existed in the XIII century and it is not reckless to risk that the area was already a parish, although rural, of low population density and of secondary economic and social importance for Lisbon.
São Domingos de Benfica has its origins linked to a legend. It was D. João I who donated to the religious order of the Dominicans, at the request of Dr. João das Regras, the land where once stood a palace known as the Paço de Benfica, summer residence of all the sovereigns since D. Dinis.
According to legend, when that king visited the place, he underlined its natural beauty, stating: "the convent is right here".
The old settlement of Benfica was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and pleasant places, deserving this name not only for its privileged location but also for the abundance of water and trees that made it one of the most delightful and poetic places in the Lisbon area.
