Santarém is part of the statistical region (NUTS II) of Alentejo and in the statistical sub-region (NUTS III) of Lezíria do Tejo; however, it continues to be part of the Coordination and Regional Development Commission of Lisbon and Tagus Valley, which kept the designation of the former NUTS II with the same name. It also belonged to the former province of Ribatejo (of which it was the capital and most important urban centre), but today without any political-administrative significance, but constant in the discourses of self-identification and hetero-identification.

The inhabitants of Santarém are called "Escalabitanos" or "Santarenos".
